Christine Gentry joins BBQ on the list of good things to come out of Texas. She currently serves as the inaugural director of the Yale Teaching Fellowship at Yale University, where she is partnering with local organizations to create and implement a brand-new, fully-funded teacher pipeline for New Haven Public Schools. Prior to her current role, Christine spent a decade directing teacher residency programs in Boston, Southern California, and New York City. Before her work in teacher preparation, Christine taught English, creative writing, and oral storytelling in the public schools of Boston and New York City for thirteen years.
Christine’s research explores the intersection of identity development and community in the urban public school classroom. She co-chairs the National Council of Teachers of English Committee on Storytelling, and her academic work has been featured in publications such as English Journal and The English Record and on stages such as TEDx and The Boston Foundation’s EdTalks. She holds a B.A. from Baylor University, an Ed.M. from Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University.
In what little spare time she has, Christine performs in oral storytelling shows and leads workshops for The Story Collider. Her stories have been featured on PBS, The Moth Radio Hour, and This American Life. She is also a Moth Mainstage performer and three-time Moth GrandSLAM champion.
